Does general liability insurance cover my car or work truck?
No. The standard general liability form excludes injury and damage arising from any auto owned or operated by, rented or loaned to anyone it insures, and that includes loading and unloading. A vehicle titled to the business needs a commercial auto policy. Employees driving their own cars or rentals for work need hired and non-owned auto. Most businesses with a truck need both policies, because general liability covers the work and commercial auto covers the driving.

The detail
The general liability form excludes "Bodily injury" or "property damage" arising out of the ownership, maintenance, use or entrustment to others of any aircraft, "auto" or watercraft owned or operated by or rented or loaned to any insured, and it says "Use includes operation and loading or unloading".

The same exclusion applies even if the claim alleges negligent hiring, supervision, training or monitoring, so a lawsuit cannot route a driving accident back onto the liability policy by blaming the employer’s oversight.
ISO Commercial General Liability Coverage Form CG 00 01 04 13 (specimen)
The form defines an "auto" as a land motor vehicle, trailer or semitrailer designed for travel on public roads, including any attached machinery or equipment.

What this means for you
- If the business owns or leases the vehicle, insure it on commercial auto. Titling a truck to the company and leaving it on a personal policy is the gap carriers find after an accident, because the personal form was not written for a vehicle the business owns.
- If your people drive their own cars, add hired and non-owned auto. Their personal policy answers for them, at their limits. The business is sued too, and hired and non-owned auto is the coverage that answers for the business. It is usually inexpensive and many contracts require it at $1,000,000.
- Read the policy name before you pay. A quote labeled "business insurance" is often general liability alone. If you need to drive for work tomorrow, check that the declarations page says commercial auto or business auto.
- Mobile equipment is the exception worth asking about. Forklifts, mini excavators and similar equipment that is not designed for public roads can fall under general liability rather than auto. A trailer or a truck with a mounted machine is still an auto.

Related questions
- Do I need both general liability and commercial auto?
If the business has a vehicle and does work for customers, yes. General liability answers for injuries and damage from your work and your premises; commercial auto answers for the driving. Neither covers what the other does, which is why contracts ask for both and list them on separate lines of the certificate.
- What commercial auto covers
- My employee hit someone driving their own car on an errand for me. Am I covered?
Not by general liability. The employee’s personal auto policy usually responds first, at its own limits, and the injured person will often sue the business as well. Hired and non-owned auto is the coverage that defends and pays for the business in that suit.
- Hired and non-owned auto
- Does general liability cover damage while we load or unload a truck?
No. The auto exclusion says use of an auto includes loading and unloading, so a box dropped on someone while unloading your truck is an auto claim. Commercial auto is the policy that responds.
- Does general liability cover a trailer?
Not one designed for public roads. The form counts trailers and semitrailers as autos, so a trailer you tow belongs on the auto policy, and an equipment trailer parked at a job site is still excluded from general liability.
- Does a business owners policy (BOP) cover vehicles?
No. A BOP packages general liability with property coverage, and it carries the same auto exclusion. Hired and non-owned auto can sometimes be added to a BOP by endorsement; a vehicle the business owns still needs its own commercial auto policy.

Need this handled?
Reading about it and having it handled are different jobs, and the second one is ours. We place the accounts other brokers decline — claims history, a cancellation, an unusual operation, a business nobody wants to underwrite twice — and we will tell you when the policy you already have is the right one. Tell us the situation and a licensed human replies the same business day.
