Is a business owners policy the same as general liability?
No. A business owners policy is a bundle that contains general liability plus property coverage and usually business interruption, sold together at a lower price than the parts. General liability on its own covers only your liability to other people and nothing you own.

The detail
A business owners policy combines property and general liability coverage for eligible small and medium businesses in a single package.
Business interruption coverage is normally included in a business owners policy and is not part of a standalone general liability policy.
Eligibility for a business owners policy is restricted by size, class of business and building characteristics, so not every business can buy one.
A business owners policy does not include workers compensation, commercial auto or professional liability.
What this means for you
- The bundle is usually cheaper than the same coverage bought apart. That is the reason it exists, and it is why a business eligible for one should rarely buy standalone general liability.
- What it leaves out is predictable. Workers compensation, vehicles and professional liability sit outside every business owners policy. A business with staff, a van or advice to sell needs at least one more policy.
- Eligibility is not a formality. Size, class and the building itself decide it, and a business that grows out of the eligibility rules gets moved onto separate property and liability policies at renewal rather than being asked first.
- The business interruption piece is the one nobody reads. It pays lost income while you cannot operate, it usually carries a waiting period, and it is the part of the bundle most likely to decide whether a business survives a fire.

Related questions
- Do I need general liability if I already have a BOP?
No, because you already have it. The general liability inside a business owners policy is the same coverage, and a certificate from that policy satisfies a contract asking for general liability. Buying a second one would duplicate rather than add.
- Can I buy a BOP if I work from home?
Often yes, and it is usually the right purchase. Home insurance excludes business property and business liability almost entirely, so a laptop, stock or a client visiting the house sits outside it. Eligibility depends on the class of business rather than on the address.
Need this handled?
Reading about it and having it handled are different jobs, and the second one is ours. We place the accounts other brokers decline — claims history, a cancellation, an unusual operation, a business nobody wants to underwrite twice — and we will tell you when the policy you already have is the right one. Tell us the situation and a licensed human replies the same business day.
