Does my personal auto insurance cover driving for my business?

For an ordinary car, pickup or van, usually yes, but only at your personal limits and not for every kind of work. The standard personal auto policy covers business use of those vehicles, and it excludes carrying people or goods as a public or livery conveyance, ride-share driving while logged in, and any business use of larger vehicles. Your business is covered only as a stand-in for you and only up to your limits, which is why contracts that require $1,000,000 of auto liability are asking the business for hired and non-owned or commercial auto.

The detail

  • The personal auto policy excludes "Maintaining or using any vehicle while that insured is employed or otherwise engaged in any business" other than farming or ranching, and then says the exclusion "does not apply to the maintenance or use of a: a. Private passenger auto; b. Pickup or van; or c. Trailer used with a vehicle described in a. or b."

  • The same policy excludes liability "arising out of the ownership or operation of a vehicle while it is being used as a public or livery conveyance," including any time the insured is logged into a transportation network platform as a driver, with exceptions for a share-the-expense car pool and volunteer or charitable use.

ISO Personal Auto Policy PP 00 01 09 18 (Virginia SCC filing)

  • For a vehicle other than the policyholder’s own covered auto, the personal policy insures another person or organization "only with respect to legal responsibility for acts or omissions of you or any family member," and only if that organization does not own or hire the vehicle.

ISO Personal Auto Policy PP 00 01 09 18 (Virginia SCC filing)

  • California’s minimum auto liability, from January 1, 2025, is $30,000 for injury to one person, $60,000 for injury to two or more people and $15,000 for property damage in one accident.

What this means for you

  • Tell your personal carrier how you use the car. The form covers business use of a car, pickup or van, but the application asks about it and the rate reflects it. A car declared as commute-only that turns out to be a daily sales route is a misrepresentation question after a claim.
  • Do not use a personal policy for deliveries or rides for pay. Carrying people or goods for a fee as a public or livery conveyance is excluded, and so is ride-share driving while logged in. Delivery drivers and anyone transporting clients for a fee need a policy written for it.
  • Check your limits against your contract. A personal policy at state minimum limits leaves an injured person’s claim above $30,000 for one person in California to you and the business. A contract that asks for $1,000,000 auto liability is not satisfied by a personal policy at any limit, because the business is not its named insured.
  • If the business owns the vehicle, move it to commercial auto. The personal form is written for vehicles owned by individuals. A van titled to an LLC belongs on the business’s own auto policy.

Related questions

Do I need commercial auto if I only drive my own car to clients?

For the car itself, usually not, provided your personal carrier knows you use it for work and the car is a private passenger vehicle, pickup or van. The business still has exposure when you or an employee crash on business, and hired and non-owned auto covers that cheaply.

Hired and non-owned auto
Is hired and non-owned auto the same as the auto liability my contract requires?

Sometimes. If the contract says "any auto" or "owned autos", hired and non-owned is not enough. If the business owns no vehicles, many contracts accept hired and non-owned at the required limit; others insist on scheduled autos. Send us the clause before buying, because on our calls this is the requirement owners most often get wrong.

Checking a contract’s insurance requirements
Does my personal auto policy cover DoorDash or Uber driving?

Not while you are logged in as a ride-share driver; the form says so in the livery exclusion. Delivery and ride-share platforms carry their own coverage for parts of the trip, and many personal carriers sell an endorsement that fills the gap. Ask your personal carrier for it by name.

Does my personal policy cover a box truck I use for my business?

Generally not. The business-use exception covers only private passenger autos, pickups and vans, so a box truck or a heavier vehicle used for work is excluded under the personal form and needs commercial auto.

Box truck insurance
Can I insure a vehicle titled to my LLC on my personal policy?

Usually not. Personal auto is written for vehicles owned by individuals, and a carrier that learns after a claim that the named owner is a company has grounds to dispute it. Put a company-titled vehicle on the company’s commercial auto policy.

Need this handled?

Reading about it and having it handled are different jobs, and the second one is ours. We place the accounts other brokers decline — claims history, a cancellation, an unusual operation, a business nobody wants to underwrite twice — and we will tell you when the policy you already have is the right one. Tell us the situation and a licensed human replies the same business day.
