A workers compensation market first, and a good one for the classes it wants.
An honest assessment of AmTrust from an agency that places their workers compensation regularly — where the pricing is genuinely competitive, what the audit is like, and the classes we would take elsewhere.

What we place with AmTrust.
Workers compensation
Two thirds of what we place with them, and the reason they are on this list.
Without it — Competitive on small and mid-sized payrolls in the classes they want, with pay-as-you-go billing available.
Restaurants and food service
Cafeterias and buffets are the single biggest class we write here.
Without it — Food service workers comp is a class plenty of carriers avoid. This is a market that takes it.
Business owners policies
Package cover alongside the comp, which is usually how it arrives.
Without it — Keeping the package and the comp with one carrier simplifies the audit and sometimes the price.
Cyber
Small-business cyber attached to the package rather than bought standalone.
Without it — Cheap as an add-on and expensive alone, which is the argument for putting it on the package while you can.
What people ask us about AmTrust.
What do you actually place with AmTrust?
Workers compensation, overwhelmingly — two thirds of the book — then business owners policies and small cyber. The classes are restaurants and buffets, janitorial contractors, claims adjusters and tire dealers.
Can they bill workers comp from payroll?
Yes, pay-as-you-go billing is available and worth asking for. It calculates premium from actual payroll instead of an annual estimate, which is the same thing payroll providers charge a premium to arrange.
What should I watch for?
The audit, as with any workers compensation carrier. Keep your class codes and subcontractor certificates straight during the year rather than assembling them afterwards, because that is where a good price turns into a bill.
Why go through a broker instead of buying direct?
Because it does not cost you anything, which is the part that surprises people. Broker compensation is built into the carrier’s rate whether you use one or not — buying direct does not remove the cost, it removes the person being paid to be on your side of it.
Commercial insurance is 96% of what we do — it is not a department here, it is the whole business. Not ready to talk? The guides answer the questions this page raises in more depth. Already insured with us and need a certificate or a policy change? Ask the service team rather than starting a quote — it is faster and it goes to the people whose job it is. We also write home and auto, which is usually cheaper alongside the business policy than apart from it.
