What Burbank and Glendale requires

A studio, a stage or a location will not let a production or a vendor on site without a certificate naming them as additional insured, and the requirement is enforced at the gate rather than negotiated afterwards.

Production companies are commonly formed as a separate entity per project, which means the insurance has to be arranged in the name of the entity signing the contract rather than in the name of the parent company that has the relationships.

Rented production equipment is covered by a separate policy from general liability, and a rental house agreement typically requires the coverage to be in place and evidenced before the gear leaves the building.

California requires workers compensation from the first employee, with no size threshold and no election to opt out, and the obligation reaches part-time and household staff.

Contracts, landlords and licensing bodies converge on the same numbers regardless of city, which are $1M per occurrence and $2M aggregate on general liability, and $1M combined single limit on commercial auto.

Coverage

Four lines. Each one closes a specific hole.

General liability

Third-party injury and property damage, at the $1M/$2M nearly every contract, lease and license names by default.

Without it — Most contracts cannot be signed and most commercial leases cannot start.

Workers compensation

Required at a state-set employee threshold that ranges from the first hire to the fifth, and in four states it can only be bought from the state itself.

Without it — State penalties per employee per day in most states, and personal exposure to injury suits.

Commercial auto

Vehicles owned by the business at the $1M combined single limit certificates are checked against.

Without it — A personal auto policy that excludes business use, which is discovered at claim time.

Professional liability

The work itself going wrong (advice, treatment, a design), which general liability excludes by design.

Without it — The most common claim in service businesses lands entirely on the business.

Questions

I need a certificate for a stage tomorrow. Can you do that?

Usually the same day where a policy is already in force, and that is most of what this desk does. Send the exact wording the studio or location gave you rather than a summary of it, because the entity name, the additional insured language and the limits have to match what they asked for or the certificate is rejected at the gate. Where no policy exists yet, a short term production policy can often be bound quickly, though not in an hour, so a day of notice changes the answer a lot.

Request a certificate

Do you actually understand production, or just insure it?

The owner worked in the industry before this one and carries the television credits to show for it, which is why the questions on a submission are the right ones. Production, loan out companies, rigging, touring, festivals and live events each place differently and we write across all of them. Judge that on specifics rather than on the claim, because a broker who knows the difference between a loan out and a production entity will demonstrate it in the first five minutes.

Who we are

My crew are all contractors. Do I still need workers compensation?

Almost certainly yes, and this is the single most expensive assumption in production. California decides employment status by the working relationship rather than by what the deal memo says, and an auditor who decides your crew were employees assesses their pay as payroll at your rate, retroactively. On top of that, a studio or a network will frequently require evidence of coverage regardless of how the crew is engaged.

How a premium audit works

What does business insurance cost in Burbank?

For production it depends on whether you need an annual policy or a short term one for a single project, and on what the gear and the crew look like, so the range is wide. For an office based business in Burbank or Glendale the range starts near $500 a year for general liability alone. Either way the useful first step is sending the contract that is demanding the insurance.

I own several companies that share staff. One policy or several?

One structure, and it is usually several policies inside it, each naming every entity it has to answer for. The mistake is not the number of policies, it is an employee working for a subsidiary that no policy names. We set this up for a Georgia holding company with six operating subsidiaries and a shared workforce, and the gaps we found were in the places the owners had not thought of as insurable businesses at all, a technology services arm with no errors and omissions and a party planning arm with no event liability. Start with a list of every entity, what each one does, and which people work for more than one.

Does business insurance change from state to state?

The policies look alike; the rules underneath do not. Each state has its own regulator, its own workers comp threshold and rating bureau, its own surplus-lines rules, and its own quirks: percentage windstorm deductibles in Florida, the FAIR Plan in California, monopolistic workers comp in Ohio, Washington, North Dakota and Wyoming. The state pages below carry those specifics with sources.

Are you licensed in my state?

Yes. Boring Insurance Agency is licensed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Every state page names the regulator where you can verify that.

Do state minimum insurance requirements apply to my business?

Mostly no, and relying on them is the classic mistake. State minimum auto limits are written for personal cars; commercial contracts check certificates against $1M. Workers comp is the exception. Its threshold is genuinely state law, and it is on each state page with the statute.
