A long-standing trucking market with a firm two-year line.
Northland writes trucking on admitted paper across roughly forty states, packages liability with physical damage and cargo, and will not consider an operator with under two years of their own authority.

What Northland is.
Package or monoline
Auto liability, physical damage and motor truck cargo as a package, with monoline physical damage and cargo available in most states — useful when liability is placed elsewhere.
Without it — A monoline cargo and physical damage option keeps a fleet insured on the equipment when the liability market is hostile.
Two years of authority, firmly
Operators with under two years of their own authority are not eligible. Dump operations need three years, and six in Texas, Florida and Georgia, with no losses or coverage gaps in the preceding thirty-six months and drivers aged twenty-five or over.
Without it — The dump tenure rules are stricter than the general ones and are where submissions get returned.
Small fleets bind quickly
One to ten units bind in-house at the wholesaler, so a complete submission does not wait on a carrier queue. On a single unit the owner must drive.
Without it — In-house binding authority is the difference between a same-week certificate and a fortnight.
Where they are absent
Not available in New York or California, and not in Florida for fleet business.
Without it — New York is thin across most of the trucking market, not just here.
What people ask us about Northland.
Will Northland look at my new authority?
No. Under two years of your own authority is an eligibility rule rather than a pricing factor, so there is no version of the submission that works in year one. Come back at two years with clean loss runs and Northland becomes a sensible market — that gap is exactly why year-one placements should be reviewed rather than rolled over.
Why do dump trucks have different rules?
Because the loss experience is different. Dump work concentrates hazards ordinary freight does not — construction sites, unpaved surfaces, overhead obstructions, tipping while raised, and short local runs with more stops per mile. Carriers respond with longer tenure requirements and tighter driver rules rather than with price alone, which is why a three or six-year requirement appears where the general rule is two.
Can I get physical damage and cargo here if my liability is elsewhere?
Often yes, and it is a genuinely useful structure. When liability is hard to place, keeping the equipment and the freight insured on a specialist market while liability sits with whoever will take it is usually better than leaving a financed truck uninsured. It is not free — two policies mean two renewals and two claims contacts — but it beats the alternative.
Is this appetite current?
It reflects the carrier’s own market guidance as of the third quarter of 2026, and appetite moves — classes get added, states get pulled, and tenure requirements tighten after a bad quarter. Treat it as a strong indication of whether you are worth submitting rather than as a promise of a quote. We check the live guidance before submitting anything.
Why go through a broker instead of buying direct?
Because it does not cost you anything, which is the part that surprises people. Broker compensation is built into the carrier’s rate whether you use one or not — buying direct does not remove the cost, it removes the person being paid to be on your side of it.
Commercial insurance is 96% of what we do — it is not a department here, it is the whole business. Not ready to talk? The guides answer the questions this page raises in more depth. Already insured with us and need a certificate or a policy change? Ask the service team rather than starting a quote — it is faster and it goes to the people whose job it is. We also write home and auto, which is usually cheaper alongside the business policy than apart from it.
