Boring Insurance Agency

A sport built on controlled contact, taught mostly to children.

Insurance for martial arts schools and instructors — sparring and injury, the abuse and molestation limits schools and landlords require, and the difference between a policy written for a gym and one written for a children's program.

/ Coverage

What martial arts school insurance actually covers.

Contact as the curriculum

Sparring, grappling and hands-on correction are the instruction, not an incident within it. Combined with a student body that is mostly minors, that produces both an injury exposure and an abuse and molestation exposure that underwriters read together. California districts increasingly ask $3,000,000 per occurrence and $6,000,000 aggregate — Azusa Unified and Lawndale Elementary both do for work with children. Elsewhere $1M/$2M and $2M/$4M are the common asks. Read the aggregate as well as the per-occurrence number: it is the one that fails first.

Without it — A policy bought as "gym insurance" that carries a token abuse sublimit and a participant-injury exclusion nobody read.

Participant injury

Many general liability policies exclude injury to participants in the activity being taught — which, in a martial arts school, is very nearly every injury that can happen. Whether participants are covered, and on what basis, is the first thing to read.

Without it — The exact claim the school is most likely to have is the one specifically carved out.

After-school programs and pickups

Schools that collect children from campus, run after-school classes, or hold summer camps add transport and extended supervision, and districts routinely name after-school programs in their insurance requirements.

Without it — A district requirement arrives mid-term for a program already running.

What clients with martial arts school insurance ask us.

We run an after-school program at a local elementary school. What will they ask for?

General liability, workers compensation if you have employees, auto liability if you transport, and abuse and molestation as a named limit — Santa Ana Unified lists after-school programs explicitly among the consultants required to carry it. California districts increasingly ask $3,000,000 per occurrence and $6,000,000 aggregate for work with children; $1M/$2M and $2M/$4M are common elsewhere. They will also specify additional-insured wording, which is where certificates most often get refused.

The abuse and molestation limit, explained

Commercial insurance is 96% of what we do — it is not a department here, it is the whole business. Not ready to talk? The guides answer the questions this page raises in more depth. Already insured with us and need a certificate or a policy change? Ask the service team rather than starting a quote — it is faster and it goes to the people whose job it is. We also write home and auto, which is usually cheaper alongside the business policy than apart from it.
