Does USA Boxing insurance cover my boxing gym?

Only during USA Boxing sanctioned events and scheduled practices with a coach present, and only for registered members. USA Boxing’s own manual says a club with "its own facilities" should "obtain separate liability insurance coverage." Fitness classes for people who are not members, your premises the rest of the week, your vehicles and your employees all sit outside the USA Boxing policy, so a gym that runs as a business needs its own general liability and usually workers comp.

Fought amateur MMA and came close to turning pro, winning the bout in which he broke his jaw. He knows what a gym’s product actually is and why running a fight team changes the price. When a carrier that has never seen a mat starts asking its questions, he already has the answers. This agent will literally go to the mat for you.

The detail

  • USA Boxing’s insurance manual says "the insurance applies to USA Boxing sanctioned competitions and organized practices at which a coach, manager or trainer is physically present. If an individual club has its own facilities or participates outside of USA Boxing sanctioned matches, it is important that they obtain separate liability insurance coverage."

  • The manual defines organized practice as "participation in practice that is scheduled by USA Boxing, under the direct supervision and direct sponsorship of the coach or manager of USA Boxing," and adds that "All participants (athletes, coaches, officials MUST be registered with USA Boxing)."

  • The 2025 liability policy carries a $3,000,000 each occurrence limit and a $5,000,000 general aggregate, with $1,000,000 for participant legal liability in the aggregate, $1,000,000 for neurodegenerative injury, and sexual abuse and molestation at $1,000,000 each occurrence and $2,000,000 aggregate, with no deductible. It runs January 1 to December 31.

  • Its listed exclusions include "Injury or death of an employee," "Tough Man, kick boxing and martial arts-related events or practices," "All auto exposures" and "Medical no-fault payments," and it says "Coverage is for negligence only of the insured parties."

  • The manual’s FAQ answers "Our club owns a van. Is it covered?" with "No, your club must obtain its own car insurance," and says spectators at events and in the gym are covered "only for incidents that arise from negligence during boxing related activities."

  • Member clubs are covered automatically, so the manual says "the ONLY group that a certificate of insurance should be requested for is a non-member third party, such as the facility owner," and asks for certificate requests "at least 14 days prior to the event."

What this means for you

  • Fitness boxing students are probably not on it. The policy is written around registered members at scheduled, supervised practice. A cardio boxing class full of people who never registered with USA Boxing is a gym business, and your own general liability has to cover it.
  • The landlord’s certificate can come from USA Boxing, for the boxing. USA Boxing will name a facility owner as additional insured if you ask at least 14 days ahead. That certificate still only speaks to USA Boxing activity, so a lease that covers the whole week of use needs your own policy behind it too.
  • Employees need workers comp from you. The USA Boxing policy excludes injury to an employee. A paid coach or front desk worker who gets hurt is a workers comp claim, and most states require you to carry it once you have staff.
  • Kickboxing and Muay Thai need a different answer. The USA Boxing policy excludes kickboxing and martial arts events and practices. A gym that teaches both needs a policy written for the striking arts it actually runs.

Related questions

Does USA Boxing cover a sparring injury between two members?

The liability policy carries a participant legal liability aggregate of $1,000,000 for claims brought by participants, within its terms. The separate accident policy pays medical bills as excess over the member’s own health insurance. Your gym’s own policy will often carry a participant exclusion, which is why the two have to be read together.

We run open gym hours with no coach on the floor. Is that covered?

Not by USA Boxing, on the manual’s wording. It applies to organized practices "at which a coach, manager or trainer is physically present" and that USA Boxing schedules. Open gym time is a premises exposure for your own general liability.

Can I get a certificate from USA Boxing for my landlord?

Yes. A non-member third party such as the facility owner can be named. Request it at least 14 days before you need it. Read your lease first, because a lease usually requires coverage for all use of the space, not just sanctioned boxing.

Does USA Boxing cover our van to tournaments?

No. The manual says a club van needs its own car insurance, and the liability policy excludes all auto exposures. Volunteers driving their own cars to a tournament are a hired and non-owned auto question.

Is the 2025 manual still current?

It was the newest edition published on USA Boxing’s site that we could find on October 4, 2026, and its policy period runs January 1 to December 31. Ask USA Boxing or its broker for the current year’s manual before you rely on a limit.

Need this handled?

Reading about it and having it handled are different jobs, and the second one is ours. We place the accounts other brokers decline — claims history, a cancellation, an unusual operation, a business nobody wants to underwrite twice — and we will tell you when the policy you already have is the right one. Tell us the situation and a licensed human replies the same business day.
