A Honolulu wedding bar is licensed six weeks out, or it is the hotel's.
Most Hawaii venue contracts name a million per occurrence and two aggregate, and that pair is what a one-day event policy is built around; a venue that wants more will say so in the contract, and a couple that reads it before buying does not have to buy twice. We set the coverage up and produce the certificate — usually the same day.

What Hawaii requires
Can I get a one-day alcohol permit for a wedding or party in Hawaii?
On Oahu, the Honolulu Liquor Commission's special liquor license covers up to three event days per application and must be filed at least six weeks before the earliest event date, while a catering license is available to restaurant and hotel licensees only, three weeks ahead.

Who can cater a wedding bar in Honolulu?
The Honolulu Liquor Commission issues its catering license to restaurant and hotel licensees only, so a wedding bar on Oahu that is not under a special license is poured by a licensed restaurant or hotel.

Can a host be sued in Hawaii if a guest drinks too much and hurts someone?
Hawaii Revised Statutes § 663-41 makes any adult who furnishes alcohol to someone under 21, or who controls premises where under-21 guests drink, liable for the injuries that minor causes, which reaches a private event host directly; the section does not apply to licensed sales.

Is event insurance required by law in Hawaii?
The Honolulu Liquor Commission's special license packet says nothing about insurance, so the limits a host carries at a Hawaii event come from the venue contract rather than from that rule.

Limits
What to carry, and why that number.
- General liability, per occurrence and aggregate$1,000,000 / $2,000,000
- Host liquor liabilityIncluded, at the general liability limit
- Hawaii gives an injured third party a claim over service to a minor or an intoxicated guest, and the base event form excludes alcohol claims, so the venue asks for host liquor by name rather than trusting the general liability limit to answer it.
- Venue named as additional insuredBy endorsement, on the certificate
- Nearly every Hawaii venue contract asks for the venue on the policy by endorsement, and a certificate with the venue's name typed in the description box does not satisfy the clause.
Coverage
Four lines. Each one closes a specific hole.
Third-party bodily injury
Somebody at your event is hurt and looks to the organizer.
Without it — The claim lands on you personally where there is no entity, and on the entity where there is.
Third-party property damage
Damage to the venue, the grounds, the equipment or the neighbors.
Without it — The venue bills you from the deposit and then beyond it.
Host liquor liability
Alcohol served without a license: a cash bar, a hosted drink, a supplied keg.
Without it — The base form excludes alcohol claims, and this is the one the venue is most worried about.
Additional insured status
The venue, the landowner, the city or the university added by endorsement as the contract requires.
Without it — The contract is unmet however good the coverage is, and the booking does not stand.

Questions
Can I get an alcohol permit for my wedding in Hawaii?
On Oahu, yes, but not in a hurry. The Honolulu Liquor Commission's special liquor license covers up to three event days per application and has to be filed at least six weeks before the first date, and the packet is written for organizations rather than for a couple. Most Hawaii weddings sidestep it by using a licensed hotel or restaurant, which is who the catering license is limited to. Your event policy then covers the host side, and the venue names the limit it wants.
Does the venue's insurance cover me as the host in Hawaii?
No, and the contract says so. The venue's policy protects the venue, and a Hawaii venue agreement usually asks for two things from you: your own general liability limit, and the venue named as an additional insured on it. The second clause moves the venue's exposure at your event onto your policy. A guest hurt on the dance floor, a damaged wall or a claim over a drunk guest is presented to your certificate first, and the venue's insurer expects to find it there.
Can I be sued in Hawaii if a wedding guest drives home drunk?
Yes, in principle. Hawaii Revised Statutes § 663-41 makes any adult who furnishes alcohol to someone under 21, or who controls premises where under-21 guests drink, liable for the injuries that minor causes, which reaches a private event host directly; the section does not apply to licensed sales. The claim runs first at whoever held the license and poured, and a host who supplied the alcohol or ran the bar can be joined, which is what the host liquor line on an event policy exists to answer.
Does the caterer's or bartender's insurance cover my Hawaii event?
Only for whoever holds the license. Hawaii writes its one-day license for organizations and businesses rather than for a couple, so at most weddings the permit and the liquor policy sit with the venue or caterer, and that policy answers claims made against them. A claim against the host is a separate claim, and the venue contract is written so that it reaches your policy rather than theirs. Get the caterer's certificate, and carry your own event policy with host liquor included.
Can I buy it for one day?
Yes, and most events do. Single-event coverage is written for the dates of the event, usually including set-up and tear-down, and it is issued quickly enough to satisfy a venue asking on short notice. If you run more than three or four events a year, an annual policy is generally cheaper and means the certificate exists before it is asked for.
The venue sent an insurance requirement. What are they actually asking for?
Almost always three things, and only the first is a number: a limit, usually one or two million per occurrence; their entity named as additional insured by endorsement rather than typed on the certificate; and often a waiver of subrogation. Send us the contract rather than the number: the wording is what gets certificates rejected, and it is the part people summarize.
Does it cover the event being cancelled?
No, and they are constantly confused. Event liability pays when somebody else is injured or their property is damaged. Cancellation coverage pays YOU back for money you have already committed when the event cannot happen. Venues require the first; the second is the one that saves your own budget, and most organizers buy only the one they were asked for.
We are serving alcohol. Is that included?
Host liquor is commonly included where you are not in the business of selling it: a wedding with a hosted bar, a company party. The moment there is a cash bar, a license, or alcohol as a revenue line, it is liquor liability proper and it is a separate coverage that the base form excludes by name.
