It is not really about the death benefit. It is about locking in insurability.
A small permanent policy on a child, with a guaranteed purchase option: the point of which is that no future diagnosis can take away their right to buy coverage as an adult.

One licensed human replies the same business day — not five agents, not an auto-responder. If the policy you have is already the right one, we will tell you.
We use this to quote and service your insurance, and we do not sell it or pass it to lead networks. Privacy policy.
Send us what you have. We’ll tell you if it’s right.
Your current policy paperwork, a renewal notice, or nothing at all. A licensed agent reads it and replies the same business day.
What child life insurance actually covers.
Guaranteed insurability
The right to buy more coverage later at set ages, with no medical questions.
Without it — A diagnosis of type 1 diabetes, epilepsy or a heart condition in childhood can close the market permanently.
A modest death benefit
Final expenses, and time away from work.
Without it — A grieving family takes unpaid leave and pays for a funeral in the same month.
Cash value
A slow accumulation the policy owner can borrow against.
Without it — Nothing. It is the weakest argument for these policies, and it is often oversold.
What clients with child life insurance ask us.
Is this a good investment for a child?
No, and it is usually sold as one, which is worth saying plainly. As a savings vehicle a 529 plan or an ordinary index fund will beat a whole life policy’s cash value comfortably over eighteen years, and the early-year returns on these policies are negative once the cost of insurance comes out. Buy it for what it actually does — guaranteeing your child can buy life insurance as an adult regardless of their health — and if that is not a concern for your family, it is fine to decline it.
When is it genuinely worth buying?
When there is a family history that an underwriter will care about — type 1 diabetes, congenital heart conditions, certain cancers, some genetic conditions — because the policy is bought before any of it is diagnosable and cannot then be rescinded or repriced for it. It is also reasonable if you would want a small policy in place anyway and value the guaranteed purchase option. What it is not is a substitute for insuring the parents, which is the actual financial exposure and should be handled first.
Commercial insurance is 96% of what we do — it is not a department here, it is the whole business. Not ready to talk? The guides answer the questions this page raises in more depth. Already insured with us and need a certificate or a policy change? Ask the service team rather than starting a quote — it is faster and it goes to the people whose job it is. We also write home and auto, which is usually cheaper alongside the business policy than apart from it.
