Boring Insurance Agency

A weekly hour alone with a child, in your home or theirs, for years.

Insurance for private music teachers and studios — the one-to-one teaching relationship underwriters actually price, instruments worth more than the policy assumes, and the limits schools and districts ask for.

/ Coverage

What music teacher insurance actually covers.

The lesson itself

Private music instruction is a long, repeated, one-to-one relationship with a minor, often in a home and often with hands-on correction of posture or hand position. That is the abuse and molestation exposure in full, and it is why a school placement or district residency asks for a limit. California districts increasingly ask $3,000,000 per occurrence and $6,000,000 aggregate — Azusa Unified and Lawndale Elementary both do for work with children. Elsewhere $1M/$2M and $2M/$4M are the common asks. Read the aggregate as well as the per-occurrence number: it is the one that fails first.

Without it — A school program refuses the certificate, and the underlying risk is unfunded.

Teaching in a home — yours or theirs

A homeowner's policy generally excludes business activity, and teaching for money in your living room is business activity. Traveling to a student's home replaces that with a different question: whose insurance answers when something is damaged or someone is hurt there.

Without it — The most common gap in this trade — the teacher believes the house policy covers the studio, and it specifically does not.

Instruments and equipment

A teaching instrument, and any instrument left in your care by a student, is business personal property in transit and at a location that may not be yours. Values here are routinely underinsured because the policy was bought around liability.

Without it — A damaged instrument belonging to a student is a claim against you with no property cover behind it.

/ Questions

What clients with music teacher insurance ask us.

I only teach a few students. Is this really necessary?

For the liability side, often not — and we will tell you when a small studio is fine as it stands. It becomes necessary the moment somebody else sets the terms: a school, a district, a church hall or a music academy that requires a certificate before you teach on their premises. At that point the requirement decides, not the size of your studio.

Commercial insurance is 96% of what we do — it is not a department here, it is the whole business. Not ready to talk? The guides answer the questions this page raises in more depth. Already insured with us and need a certificate or a policy change? Ask the service team rather than starting a quote — it is faster and it goes to the people whose job it is. We also write home and auto, which is usually cheaper alongside the business policy than apart from it.
