Does my ELD affect my insurance premium?

Substantially, and which device you chose matters as much as having one. Several trucking carriers run telematics programmes that discount the policy when you share data from an approved device — commonly starting around 5% at binding and rising with clean data, while a device outside the approved list can be capped far lower.

The detail

What this means for you

  • Check the approved vendor list BEFORE you buy the device. Choosing an ELD outside a carrier’s programme can cost you more in lost discount every year than the device saved you once.
  • The discount compounds with clean data rather than arriving all at once. The largest tiers require months of continuous sharing, so switching devices resets the clock as well as the eligibility.
  • Data sharing is the condition. These programmes want the feed, not the receipt — a device you own and do not share from earns nothing.
  • It cuts both ways, and honestly so. Sharing data with a carrier means sharing hours-of-service and driving behaviour, and a fleet with a genuine problem in that data may not want to. That is a real consideration rather than a reason not to ask.
  • The device is also the evidence for everything else. Hours-of-service compliance, an accident reconstruction, and a defence against a claim you did not cause all come off the same system.

Which ELDs get the best insurance discount?
It depends on the carrier, which is the point — there is no universally best device, only devices that are on a given programme’s approved list. Samsara, Motive, Geotab, Omnitracs, PeopleNet and Garmin appear on major programmes, and the same device can be preferred with one carrier and merely acceptable with another. If you are buying an ELD and shopping insurance in the same year, sequence them: find out which carriers will quote you, then buy a device they reward.
How much can telematics actually save?
Published programmes range from a few per cent at binding to fifteen or twenty per cent for fleets with sustained clean data, plus device subsidies in some cases. Treat any specific figure as a starting point rather than a promise — these structures change, they are subject to underwriting, and the largest numbers are attached to the best records.
I already have an ELD for compliance. Am I getting the discount?
Not automatically, and plenty of operators are not. The discount usually requires enrolling in the carrier’s programme and authorising the data feed, which is a separate step from running the device for hours-of-service compliance. It is worth asking outright at renewal, because nobody will volunteer that you have been leaving it on the table.
Does this apply to a one-truck operation?
Yes, and proportionally it can matter more. A single owner-operator has no fleet-wide loss history to argue with, so telematics is one of the few pieces of evidence available that the driving is good. It is one of the more effective things a small operator can do to influence their own price.

Need this handled?

We do the filings, and we place the accounts other brokers decline — lapsed authority, claims history, new ventures. Tell us the situation and a licensed human replies the same business day.
