Boring Insurance Agency
A compliance specialist in an office over a truck yard at dusk, holding a stack of driver files beside a laptop and a desk phone, a wall calendar with deadlines circled behind her and tractor units parked under the yard lights outside the window
Files stacked. Deadlines circled.Every carrier in that yard is one missed filing away from parked.

A missed filing parks your client’s trucks.

Authority filings, BOC-3s, drug and alcohol programs and safety audit prep all carry a deadline, and a deadline missed for a motor carrier costs them revenue they will ask you to pay back. We write professional liability for the firms that do this work.

/ Coverage

What DOT compliance businesses actually need.

Professional liability

Claims that a filing, a program you ran or advice you gave cost a carrier money, such as an inactive authority or a failed audit.

Without it — General liability answers injury and property damage, and a lapsed MC number is neither.

Cyber liability

A breach of the driver files you hold, which carry Social Security numbers, CDL copies and drug test results.

Without it — Driver data is regulated, and the notification cost lands on whoever was holding it.

General liability

The ordinary exposures of an office and of visiting a carrier’s yard for an audit or a training day.

Without it — Shipper and carrier contracts often ask for it before you can be engaged.

/ Questions

What our DOT compliance clients ask us.

What kind of claim does a compliance firm actually face?

Almost always a missed or wrong filing. An MCS-150 update that never went in, a UCR registration filed late, a BOC-3 that lapsed when its process agent left the business. Any one of them can put a carrier out of service, and the carrier’s claim is the revenue they lost while their trucks sat. The next most common is a drug and alcohol program that was not run to the rules, which surfaces at an audit or after an accident.

Does it matter which services we offer?

Yes, and the application should list them honestly. Registration and permit filing is the simplest work to insure. Running a drug and alcohol consortium, acting as a designated employer representative, or doing mock audits and safety consulting adds exposure, because a carrier relied on your judgment rather than only your paperwork. Underwriters price the mix, so describe what you actually do rather than the broadest version of it.

We are a one or two person filing service. Is this worth carrying?

Usually, because the claims are financial and the clients are small businesses without much margin. A single carrier parked for a week can claim more than a small firm earns in a year, and defending that claim costs money whether or not you were at fault. Policies for small filing services are not expensive, and some carriers and brokers will not refer work to a firm that cannot show one.

You also insure trucking companies. Is that a conflict?

No, and it helps. We already know what an authority lapse or an out-of-service order does to a carrier, which is the exact exposure your policy has to answer. Your policy is written for your firm, and nothing about it is shared with the carriers you serve.

How we insure motor carriers

Commercial insurance is 96% of what we do — it is not a department here, it is the whole business. Not ready to talk? The guides answer the questions this page raises in more depth. Already insured with us and need a certificate or a policy change? Ask the service team rather than starting a quote — it is faster and it goes to the people whose job it is. We also write home and auto, which is usually cheaper alongside the business policy than apart from it.

Handed a lease, a vendor packet or a client contract with insurance requirements? Paste it into the COI Requirements Decoder to see what each one means for your business, or read what the requirements mean.
