Which state is cheapest for commercial truck insurance?

Nobody can honestly rank them, and the tables that do are guessing. Where you are garaged genuinely moves the price, but it moves it far less than your driving records, your loss runs, your radius and what you haul — so a state ranking answers a question that is not really the one you are asking.

The detail

  • State minimum liability limits vary in both directions: Maine sets $350,000 for intrastate property carriers while most states sit at the federal $750,000, and several set tiers by weight starting at $300,000.

  • Some states change the shape of the policy rather than the price of it. Michigan no-fault adds personal injury protection alongside the liability, and New York commonly wants workers compensation proof before it will issue or keep an operating permit.

What this means for you

  • Do not move your business for the insurance. The saving a state ranking implies is smaller than one at-fault claim or one bad MVR, and the cost of relocating an operation dwarfs both.
  • Ask what your radius does instead. Moving from a 500-mile radius to a 100-mile one changes the price more reliably than any state line, and it is a decision you actually control.
  • Get your loss runs and your MVRs in front of the underwriter before they ask. A clean file presented well beats a cheap ZIP code.
  • Watch the state rules that change the POLICY rather than the premium — no-fault, workers compensation as a condition of authority, cargo filings. Those are compliance, not price, and missing one costs your authority rather than money.
  • Treat any published average with suspicion. If a table does not tell you the fleet size, the radius, the commodity and the loss history behind the number, it is describing nobody.

Why will nobody give me a straight average?

Because the honest inputs are not public. Premium turns on units, radius, commodity, driver records, loss history and limits, and a single number that averages a clean local hotshot with a long-haul reefer fleet describes neither of them.

Does the state really matter at all?

Yes, but mostly through things that are not the rate: the minimum limits it sets, whether it is a no-fault state, how aggressively it enforces, its litigation climate and its cargo theft corridors. Those change what you must buy and how a claim resolves more than they change the price per truck.

The state requirements, state by state
What moves my price the most?

Driver records first, then loss runs, then radius, then what you haul. Those four decide most of the number, and all four are things you can improve before your next renewal.

Getting your loss runs together
Are trucks cheaper to insure than cars?

No, and it is not close. A commercial truck carries higher limits, more exposure per mile, cargo, filings and a business behind it that can be sued — so the comparison people are really making is between a personal auto policy and a commercial one, which are different products.

Would a new authority pay more?

Yes, materially, because there is no history to rate. That is a first-year problem rather than a permanent one, and it is the single biggest reason a new carrier should not judge the market by their first quote.

Getting insured as a new authority

Need this handled?

Your insurer makes the filings, and getting them made on time is our job — the right carrier, the right form, and somebody chasing it until the regulator shows it active. We also place the accounts other brokers decline: lapsed authority, claims history, new ventures. Tell us the situation and a licensed human replies the same business day.
