Boring Insurance Agency

Should I buy workers comp through my payroll company?

Usually not, and the reason is simple: it was never shopped. Your payroll provider sells you a policy from a short panel of carriers they have a relationship with, and nobody compared it to the rest of the market. It is one quote presented as an answer.

The detail

  • Moving an account off payroll-provider workers compensation has saved our clients around half their premium on average.

  • Pay-as-you-go billing, calculated from each payroll run rather than an annual estimate, is offered by many ordinary workers compensation carriers and is not exclusive to payroll providers.

What this means for you

  • Get one competing quote before you renew. You do not have to move anything to find out what your own risk prices at elsewhere, and it is the only way to know whether the bundle is a good deal.
  • Ask for the workers comp premium as its own number. If it arrives inside a combined services invoice, you cannot compare it to anything, which is part of why it stays where it is.
  • Do not treat pay-as-you-go as a reason to stay. Most of the carriers we place with will bill from your payroll the same way, so you can keep the cash flow and change the price.
  • Never sign an agent of record letter you have not had explained. One signature moves control of your policy to somebody else, and it is the single easiest thing in this industry to do by accident.
  • Check who the carrier actually is. The paper behind a bundled program is often a carrier you could have been placed with directly, at a different price.

Related questions

Why would the same coverage cost more through payroll?

Because the price is set by how many carriers competed for it, and in a bundle the answer is usually one or two. Workers comp rates vary widely between carriers for the same class code, so an account that is not marketed is priced by whoever happened to get it.

Is the convenience worth paying for?

That is the real question, and the honest answer is that you are probably not choosing it. Most carriers we use offer payroll-linked billing, so you can have the same convenience without the bundled price — which means the convenience is not what you are paying extra for.

What is an agent of record letter?

A one-page letter that moves control of your insurance policy to a different agent. It does not change your coverage or your carrier, it changes who gets paid and who services it. Some of our clients have told us they signed one without being told that is what it did.

What an agent actually does
Will switching disrupt my payroll?

No. Your payroll service and your workers compensation policy are two separate things that a bundle presents as one, and you can change the insurance without touching how your staff get paid.

What about a PEO?

Different animal, and sometimes the right one. A PEO co-employs your staff and puts you inside their master policy, which is a genuine answer for a business the standard market has declined rather than a convenience purchase.

How PEOs work
How do I find out what I am actually paying?

Ask your payroll provider for the workers compensation premium as a separate figure, plus your class codes and your experience modification factor. Those three things are all anyone needs to quote you, and you are entitled to all three.

Need this handled?

Your insurer makes the filings, and getting them made on time is our job — the right carrier, the right form, and somebody chasing it until the regulator shows it active. We also place the accounts other brokers decline: lapsed authority, claims history, new ventures. Tell us the situation and a licensed human replies the same business day.
