What is additional insured for ongoing operations (CG 20 10)?
It extends additional insured status to another party for liability arising out of your work while that work is still in progress. It is the endorsement most contracts name first, and on its own it stops responding when the job is finished.

What this means for you
- The edition date matters as much as the form number. Later editions narrow what the additional insured gets, and a contract written around an older edition may not be satisfied by a newer one.
- A blanket additional insured endorsement — one that automatically covers anyone you have agreed in writing to name — is usually more practical than scheduling each party by name, because it does not require a new endorsement per contract.
- Ongoing operations coverage ends when your work does. If the contract also requires completed operations, that is a second endorsement.
Related questions
- What is a blanket additional insured endorsement?
One that grants additional insured status automatically to any party you have agreed in writing to add, rather than listing each by name. For a contractor signing several contracts a year it removes an endorsement request from every one of them. Not every carrier offers it, and the ones that do sometimes limit it to the scope the written contract requires, which is generally reasonable, but is worth reading rather than assuming.
- Does adding an additional insured cost me anything?
Often little or nothing directly, and that is misleading. What it costs is coverage: your limits are now shared with the party you added, and a claim against them erodes the limit available to you. The real argument for carrying higher limits, or an umbrella, sits right there on contracts that require additional insured status.
- What is CG 20 10?
CG 20 10 is the ISO general liability endorsement titled Additional Insured, Owners, Lessees Or Contractors, Scheduled Person Or Organization. It gives the party scheduled on it, usually the general contractor or the project owner, additional insured status for liability arising out of your ongoing operations for them. It is the form most construction contracts name first, and on its own it stops responding once the work is finished.
- What do the edition dates on CG 20 10 mean (11 85, 07 04, 04 13)?
The trailing numbers are the month and year ISO published that edition, so CG 20 10 11 85 is November 1985, 07 04 is July 2004 and 04 13 is April 2013. The 11 85 edition is the broad one, written around "your work" so it reached completed operations as well as work in progress. Later editions narrowed the grant to ongoing operations and, from 04 13, to no more than the written contract requires. Most carriers will not issue the 1985 form today, so when a contract demands it the practical answer is CG 20 10 plus CG 20 37.
